The New York Mets and the Seattle Mariners will both be gunning for a victory on Friday when they meet at Safeco Field.

Rafael Montero will be the starting pitcher for the Mets on this day. Right hander Montero is 1-7 this season with a 5.19 ERA.

It’ll be Ariel Miranda toeing the rubber for the Mariners in this contest. Left hander Miranda is 7-4 with a 4.30 ERA so far this season.

Montero has lost each of his last three starts, including a setback against Oakland on Sunday in which he allowed three runs and seven hits – three homers – over seven innings. The 26-year-old Dominican won his only turn in the rotation on the road this season, defeating San Francisco on June 25 after giving up one run in 5 2/3 frames. Montero, who never has faced Seattle, is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA in two career interleague starts.

After three straight outings in which he worked at least seven innings, Miranda has failed to make it past the sixth in each of his last three turns – all no-decisions. The 28-year-old Cuban, who yielded two runs and five hits over 5 1/3 frames against the New York Yankees on Saturday, has won only one of his last eight outings. Miranda, who will be meeting the Mets for the first time, is 3-0 with a 5.19 ERA in five career interleague starts.

Oddsmakers currently have the Mariners listed as 148-moneyline favorites versus the Mets, while the game’s total is sitting at 9½.

The New York Mets began cleaning house early and figure to continue shedding themselves of veterans over the course of their three-game series against the host Seattle Mariners, which begins Friday. New York made the first of what likely will be several deals prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline on Thursday, sending Lucas Duda to Tampa Bay.

The Mets, who acquired right-hander Drew Smith from the Rays, fell 9 1/2 games back in the National League wild-card race with Thursday’s 7-5 loss at San Diego. New York dropped to 2-2 on its 10-game road trip despite receiving a homer and three RBIs from Jay Bruce, who also could be on the move before Monday’s deadline. The Mariners look to remain in the thick of the American League wild-card chase as they continue a 10-game homestand during which they have gone 3-4. Seattle, which is 3 1/2 games behind Kansas City for the second wild card, needs more production from Nelson Cruz as the All-Star has recorded one RBI without belting a homer over his last nine contests.

In their last action, Seattle was a 4-0 loser on the road against the Red Sox. Bettors on Boston at -205 on the moneyline collected their winnings from that game, while the total score (4) sent UNDER bettors home happy as well.

In their last action, New York was a 7-5 loser on the road against the Padres. Bettors on San Diego at 109 on the moneyline collected their winnings from that game, while the total score (12) sent OVER bettors home happy as well.
