The Mississippi Rebels and the Monmouth Hawks will both be gunning for a victory on Tuesday when they meet at Multipurpose Activity Center.

ABOUT OLE MISS (20-13): The Rebels have a solid trio of guards Deandre Burnett and Terence Davis, and forward Sebastian Saiz, who account for nearly 60 percent of the team’s scoring. Saiz, a 6-9 senior from Spain, produced 20 double-doubles this season and is one of 16 Division I players to average double digits in points and rebounds (14.9, 11.2). Burnett, who leads the team with 16.7 points and 3.1 assists per game, and junior Cullen Neal are the team’s top 3-point shooters, having combined to make close to 39 percent on the season.

ABOUT MONMOUTH (27-6): Justin Robinson is the player most responsible for the Hawk’s rise to prominence from an 11-21 record in 2013-14 to 55 wins the last two seasons. The senior went from averaging 7.1 points as a freshman to 13.4 points as a sophomore to better than 19 points as a junior and senior. Fellow seniors Je’lon Hornbeak, Chris Brady, Collin Stewart and Josh James also played a part as have Micah Seaborn and Austin Tilghman for the Hawks, who will try to better last season’s second round exit in the NIT.

Oddsmakers currently have the Hawks listed as 2-point favorites versus the Rebels, while the game’s total is sitting at 163½.

For the second straight season, Monmouth finds itself in the NIT when all signs pointed to it going to the NCAA Tournament. The fourth-seeded Hawks dominated the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference during the regular season, but after another slip up in the conference tournament, they host fifth-seeded Ole Miss on Tuesday.

King Rice’s team won 17 straight games prior to falling to Siena in the MAAC semifinals on March 5 and had a similar run last season before losing in the conference final to Iona, which earned the automatic bid both seasons. “That’s how the rules go, but no one is going to take away what we did,” Rice told the media. “We’re still learning how to do this.” The Rebels are probably wondering if they deserved a ticket to the Big Dance after finishing 10-8 in the SEC, the same record as Vanderbilt, which was 19-15 overall. Andy Kennedy’s team, which returns to the postseason after a one-year absence, was in win two, lose one mode since late January, capped off by Friday’s loss to Arkansas in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament.

Monmouth lost its last outing, a 89-85 result against Saints on March 05. They failed to cover in that game as a -7-point favorite.

Mississippi was a 73-72 loser in their most recent outing on the road against Razorbacks. They covered the +4.5-point spread as underdogs.
