The Georgia Bulldogs and the Kentucky Wildcats will both be trying to pick up a win on Friday when they battle at Bridgestone Arena.

ABOUT GEORGIA (19-13): Having Maten (18.4 points, 6.8 rebounds) back gives the Bulldogs an inside complement to star guard J.J. Frazier (18.6 points, 4.2 assists), and it also improves Georgia’s post defense. The Bulldogs were outstanding defensively against Tennessee, holding the Volunteers to 32.8 percent shooting and coming up with a stop on the final possession of the game. Georgia’s weakness is its bench production, which could become a factor with the Bulldogs playing on back-to-back days against a fresh Kentucky team.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (26-5): The Wildcats believe their young lineup is starting to put it all together in time for a deep run. The team’s top three scorers are freshmen, including leading scorer Malik Monk (21.2 points), who is coming off his least productive game of the season, as he failed to reach double-digits in scoring for the first time in Saturday’s 71-63 win at Texas A&M. Point guard De’Aaron Fox (15.5 points, 5.0 assists) and forward Bam Adebayo (13.3 points, 7.6 rebounds) are the other freshmen playing huge roles, and sophomore Isaiah Briscoe (12.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists) can hurt opponents, as well.

Oddsmakers currently have the Wildcats listed as 10-point favorites versus the Bulldogs, while the game’s total is sitting at 148½.

Anything short of winning the SEC Tournament probably won’t be enough to get Georgia into the NCAA Tournament field, but the Bulldogs would like to make their resume a little more appealing to the selection committee. The eighth-seeded Bulldogs, who held on for a 59-57 win over Tennessee on Thursday, can do so with an upset of top-seeded Kentucky in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals Friday in Nashville.

Kentucky closed the regular-season with eight straight wins to claim its third straight SEC crown, but the Wildcats’ larger focus is on the NCAA Tournament beginning next week. “This tournament is our way of getting ready,” Kentucky coach John Calipari told reporters. “It’s our way of getting ready and every one of these teams is capable of beating us. We know that. This is about, how are we getting in a frame of mind of how you’re going to have to play in another week.” The Wildcats swept the regular-season series, winning 90-81 in overtime at home and 82-77 at Georgia, but the Bulldogs led in the final minute of regulation in both games. The Bulldogs played most of the second matchup without big man Yante Maten, who injured his knee in the first two minutes and only returned to the lineup Thursday, scoring 12 points and grabbing five rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench.

Kentucky won its last outing, a 71-63 result against Aggies on March 04. They covered in that game as a -6.5-point favorite.

Georgia was a 59-57 winner in its last match at home against Volunteers. They covered the -1.5-point spread as favorites.
