The East Carolina Pirates and the Southern Methodist Mustangs will both be gunning for a victory on Friday when they meet at XL Center.

ABOUT SMU (27-4): Ojeleye, a transfer from Duke, leads the Mustangs in scoring (18.5 points) and is one of four players among the team’s top six scorers shooting 42.5 percent or better on 3-point shots. Sophomore point guard Shake Milton (9.3 points, 4.5 assists) has a solid assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.46 and is also one of the quartet of accurate long-range shooters with a team-high 72 made 3-pointers on 42.9 percent shooting. Senior guard Sterling Brown (12.8 points) and forward Ben Moore (11.8 points) have excelled on both ends of the floor with Brown leading the team with 45 steals and Moore first in rebounds (8.2) and blocked shots (35) for an SMU team that ranks third in Division I in scoring defense (59.4 points) and second in rebound margin (9.8).

ABOUT EAST CAROLINA (15-17): Sophomore forward Kentrell Barkley is leading the team in scoring (12.8 points) and rebounding (7.7) and is coming off a career high in both points (26) — his first 20-point performance since Nov. 25 — and rebounds (16) in the victory over Temple. Senior guard Caleb White (11.6 points) is the only other Pirate averaging in double figures while freshman point guard Jeremy Sheppard (9.2 points, 3.5 assists) has shown improvement as the Pirates have gone 5-4 over the last nine games. One of the keys to the team’s stingy defense has been the interior play of 7-1 graduate student Andre Washington, (7.0 points, 7.0 rebounds), who entered Thursday fifth in the nation in blocked shots per game (2.97) and had two more rejections against the Owls.

Oddsmakers currently have the Mustangs listed as 18-point favorites versus the Pirates, while the game’s total is sitting at TBA.

Top-seeded SMU will attempt to build on the momentum of its 13-game winning streak when it begins postseason play against ninth-seeded East Carolina in the American Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals on Friday. The regular-season AAC champions.have won by an average of 18.2 points during their winning streak and swept their two games against the Pirates in dominant fashion, winning by 31 and 40 points, while East Carolina is coming off an 80-69 victory over eighth-seeded Temple on Thursday.

The Mustangs finished the regular season playing with great confidence on both ends of the floor, averaging 98 points while holding Tulsa and Memphis to 33.8 and 35.8 percent shooting from the field in a pair of blowout victories. Redshirt junior forward Semi Ojeleye, who was named the AAC player of the year earlier this week, heads into the postseason on a roll, going 15-of-16 from the field in the wins over the Golden Hurricane and Tigers. The Pirates headed into the tournament ranked 337th in Division I in scoring (62.3 points) and 336th in field-goal shooting percentage (39.4 percent) but shot 50.9 percent against the Owls and reached 80 points for the first time this season in conference play. The Pirates’ strength is a defense that ranks 10th nationally in opponents’ field-goal percentage (38.7), but the Mustangs shot 49.2 percent and scored 85 points in the most recent meeting between the teams.

Southern Methodist was a 103-62 winner in its last match at home against Tigers. They covered the -13.5-point spread as favorites.
