The fans at Orleans Arena will be treated to a game between the BYU Cougars and the Saint Mary’s-California Gaels when they take their seats on Monday.

ABOUT BYU (22-10): The Cougars have a few other proven scorers if the Gaels decided to put multiple defenders on Landale. Freshman TJ Haws averages 13.9 points and is the team’s top 3-point shooter at 40.1 percent. Nick Emery scored 37 points in a non-conference game earlier this season and has recorded at least 20 in six other contests – including a 21-point performance in Saturday’s quarterfinals – while Elijah Bryant is the fourth BYU player averaging double figures in scoring (11.7 points) and produced a 39-point effort on Feb. 23 against Portland.

ABOUT SAINT MARY’S (27-3): Evan Fitzner played just nine minutes in the first-round win over Loyola Marymount, but he should seen an increase in minutes against the bigger Cougars. The 6-10 sophomore center scored a season-high 15 points against BYU in a career-high 36 minutes on Feb. 18, though he saw more playing time than planned because Landale was in foul trouble for much of the game. The Cougars can’t sag too far in the middle as Calvin Hermanson has had a hot hand from 3-point range lately, shooting 17-of-36 from beyond the arc over his last five contests.

Oddsmakers currently have the Gaels listed as 7½-point favorites versus the Cougars, while the game’s total is sitting at 141½.

Second-seeded Saint Mary’s will try to move closer to its first WCC tournament championship since 2012 when it meets No. 3 BYU in a semifinal contest Monday in Las Vegas. The Gaels defeated 10th-seeded Portland 81-58 in Saturday’s quarterfinals, about eight hours after the Cougars knocked off No. 6 Loyola Marymount 89-81 at Orleans Arena.

The Gaels beat BYU by 13 points in both meetings during the regular season. Saint Mary’s leading scorer and rebounder Jock Landale produced a big performance in the first meeting, finishing with 26 points and nine rebounds in the 81-68 victory, but the 6-11 junior center was held to a season-low seven points in the second contest – a 70-57 win in Provo, Utah. Landale will face another tough matchup in BYU sophomore forward Eric Mika, who recorded 28 points and 10 rebounds in the first game against Saint Mary’s while registering 18 and five in the second. Mika also leads his team in scoring (20.4 points) and rebounds (9.3), and he came up big in the first-round win against Loyola Marymount, finishing with 25 points and eight boards.

Last time out for Saint Mary’s-California, they were a 81-58 winner as they battled Pilots at home. They covered in the match as a -22.5-point favorite.

BYU won its last outing, a 89-81 result against Lions on March 04. They earned a push in that game as a -8-point favorite.
