The Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans will both be gunning for a victory on Sunday when they meet at Breslin Center.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (14-7, 4-4 Big Ten): There is a lot of talk around NCAA Tournament time about how much it helps to have senior leadership, but having seniors leading the way all season is a good thing as well. Michigan is getting that from the combination of Irvin and Walton, who combined for 33 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in the rout of Indiana on Thursday. Over the last five games, the Wolverines have shot 51.6 percent from the field, with Irvin leading the team with 31 field goals over that span, while Walton has connected on 10-of-18 from 3-point range.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (12-9, 4-4): Bridges is really coming into his own as a scorer after missing seven games with a foot injury, averaging 21.5 points and 8.0 rebounds over the last four contests. But the Spartans are 1-3 over that span, with an offense that reached the 75-point mark just once and has looked very discombobulated at times. Much like other teams will sit and wait for their superstar to score, Michigan State seems to be relying a little too much on Bridges, which is hurting the team overall even while its star continues to shine.

Bovada Sportsbook currently has the Spartans listed as 2½-point favorites versus the Wolverines, while the game’s total is sitting at 136½ according to GTBETS.

Michigan State was a 84-73 loser in its last match at home against Boilermakers. They failed to cover the +1.5-point spread as underdogs.

Last time out for Michigan, they were a 90-60 winner as they battled Hoosiers at home. They covered in the match as a -4-point favorite.

An in-state rivalry takes on even more importance with Michigan visiting Michigan State Sunday in a Big Ten matchup between two teams flirting with missing the Big Dance. The Wolverines come in hot, though, having won three of four, including a 30-point shellacking of Indiana on Thursday, while the Spartans are looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

Swingman Zak Irvin leads four double-figure scorers for coach John Beilein, averaging 14.4 points, while guard Derrick Walton Jr. is right behind at 13 points a contest. The Wolverines take care of the basketball, committing just 9.2 turnovers a game, the best average in the country. Michigan State is still trying to find its way with its four freshmen, led by Miles Bridges, who comes off his best collegiate game — a 33-point performance that set the school single-game scoring record for a freshman. Nick Ward (13.2 points, 6.2 rebounds) has emerged as a solid inside threat for coach Tom Izzo, but the Spartans have had trouble putting together a consistent offense when in the half court.
