The UCLA Bruins and the USC Trojans will both be trying to pick up a win on Wednesday when they battle at Galen Center.

ABOUT UCLA (19-2, 6-2 Pac-12): Lonzo Ball got another chance to show a national audience why he’s shot up the NBA Draft rankings this season, finishing with a season-high 24 points, six rebounds and eight assists against Arizona. If there was a downside to his performance against the Wildcats, it was the two points he scored over the final 12 1/2 minutes and that was just a meaningless layup with 19 seconds left. UCLA’s other heralded freshman, 6-10 forward T.J. Leaf, was even more invisible the second half, scoring two points over the final 17:58, and now has finished below his 16.7 average in four of the last five games.

ABOUT USC (17-4, 4-4): Elijah Stewart of the Trojans and Isaac Hamilton of the Bruins are similar players and both hit brutal shooting slumps about the same time; the start of Pac-12 play. Stewart has escaped his slump quicker and more impressively than Hamilton, however, combining for 49 points in the last two games on 18-for-32 shooting, including 12-for-22 from 3-point range. This will be Stewart’s seventh game against UCLA over the last three seasons and he hasn’t topped 16 points in any of those games, so look for a big-time effort from the 6-5 junior guard.

Oddsmakers currently have the Bruins listed as 7-point favorites versus the Trojans, while the game’s total is sitting at 170.

UCLA has shown it can score points as well as any team in the country, but the No. 7 Bruins continue to display flaws in their defense heading into their Pac-12 matchup Wednesday night at USC. UCLA gave up 96 points Saturday in an 11-point loss to No. 9 Arizona, the fourth straight game the Bruins have allowed 80 points or more, and the ability to guard speedy opposing guards seems to be the main issue.

Arizona repeatedly isolated UCLA senior guard Bryce Alford at the top of the key and then beat him off the dribble, usually resulting in an easy layup by the ball handler or a high-percentage pass to an open teammate. USC has the type of backcourt that can cause the Bruins similar problems, as their most experienced player is point guard Jordan McLaughlin, who leads the team in scoring (14.1) and assists (5.1). Alford doesn’t figure to receive less minutes from his father and head coach Steve Alford, but UCLA could help alleviate this issue with better help off the dribble from post players, T.J. Leaf and Thomas Welsh. The Trojans, coming off an 82-79 win against Arizona State, could use a big win, not only against their arch-rival but because they haven’t won two in a row since starting the season 13-0.

USC won its last outing, a 82-79 result against Sun Devils on January 22. They failed to cover in that game as a -8.5-point favorite.

UCLA was a 96-85 loser in their most recent outing at home against Wildcats. They failed to cover the -5.5-point spread as favorites.
