The Purdue Boilermakers and the Michigan State Spartans will both be gunning for a victory on Tuesday when they meet at Breslin Center.

ABOUT PURDUE (16-4, 5-2 Big Ten): Guard Carsen Edwards is settling in after averaging 13.5 points on 11-of-15 shooting in two games last week to win Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. Edwards is averaging 10.6 points and tied for the team lead with 19 steals and the Boilermakers are 10-0 when he scores in double digits. Junior center Isaac Haas is shooting a sizzling 62.3 percent from the field while averaging 13.6 points, junior forward Vincent Andrews chips in 11.9 points and junior point guard Dakota Mathias contributes 9.6 points and a team-leading 4.2 assists.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (12-8, 4-3): Freshman guard Miles Bridges suffered through a 4-of-17 shooting performance while scoring 13 points in Saturday’s 82-75 loss to Indiana and coach Tom Izzo blamed himself for Bridges playing 37 minutes in just his fifth game back from an ankle injury. “We did a poor job today. That’s gonna happen,” Izzo told reporters about the use of Bridges, averaging a team-best 15.1 points. “We are going to have to do a better job of that, and a lot of this falls on me.” Freshman forward Nick Ward has a team-high 42 blocked shots and is shooting 58.9 percent while averaging 13.4 points and senior guard Eron Harris scores 12.5 points per game.

Oddsmakers currently have the Boilermakers listed as 2-point favorites versus the Spartans, while the game’s total is sitting at 141.

Michigan State was a 82-75 loser in their most recent outing on the road against Hoosiers. They failed to cover the +4.5-point spread as underdogs.

Purdue was a 77-52 winner in their most recent outing at home against Nittany Lions. They covered the -13-point spread as favorites.

Michigan State isn’t as strong as in recent seasons but has a chance to begin altering that impression when it hosts No. 20 Purdue on Tuesday in Big Ten play. The Spartans have lost three of their last four games and are tied for fifth place in the conference but coach Tom Izzo is well-known for getting his players to improve as a season deepens.

The Boilermakers are tied for third in the Big Ten, just a half-game behind co-leaders Maryland and Wisconsin. Sophomore forward Caleb Swanigan leads the nation in rebounding (12.5) and double-doubles (16) and also ranks second in the Big Ten with an 18.5 scoring average. Purdue is just 1-2 in true road games — most recently a loss at Iowa on Jan. 12 — while the Spartans are a blistering 9-1 on their home floor with their three conference victories coming by an average of 18.3 points. Michigan State is experiencing defensive issues while allowing an average of 75.3 points in its last three losses.
