The St. John’s Red Storm and the Seton Hall Pirates will both be gunning for a victory on Sunday when they meet at Prudential Center.

ABOUT ST. JOHN’S (9-11, 3-4 Big East): Freshmen leading scorers Shamorie Ponds and Marcus LoVett garner most of the headlines for the Red Storm and deservedly so, but Kassoum Yakwe and Tariq Owens will be just as important in this game. The duo is 1-2 in the Big East in blocked shots and draw the assignment of containing Delgado, who has 36 career double-doubles, and Desi Rodriguez. Owens, who sat out last year after transferring from Tennessee, hasn’t been much of scorer this season, but his ability to rebound and block shots makes for a good player for Chris Mullin to bring off the bench to change the game.

ABOUT SETON HALL (12-6, 2-4): While getting Carrington, who was held to single digits for the first time this season, and Angel Delgado, who saw his streak of 11 straight double-doubles snapped, back on track shouldn’t be a problem, the Pirates need more from Myles Powell. The freshman guard reached double figures once in the last eight games and has been abysmal from 3-point territory, going 3-of-23 over the last three games. Powell started his career on fire, making 20-of-46 3-point attempts in the season’s first seven games, but is 14-of-60 since, leaving the Pirates without a consistent fourth scorer.

Oddsmakers currently have the Pirates listed as 8.5-point favorites versus the Red Storm, while the game’s total is sitting at 152.

Seton Hall lost its last outing, a 76-46 result against Wildcats on January 16. They failed to cover in that game as a +13.5-point underdog.

St. John’s was a 78-68 winner in their most recent outing at home against Blue Demons. They failed to cover the -10.5-point spread as favorites.

Three straight road losses should have Seton Hall longing for the friendly confines of the Prudential Center, where it battles St. John’s on Sunday in a Big East contest. After a pair of narrow defeats to Marquette and Providence, the Pirates wrapped up their road trip by scoring 46 points in a 30-point setback to No. 1 Villanova.

Scheduling three road games over a span of six days and ending with a rematch against the defending national champion and the team it beat in the Big East tournament final was a lot to ask, even for the talented Pirates. “We’ve got to change directions right now,” junior Khadeen Carrington told the media after netting a season-low six points against Villanova. “This is the time to do it.” The Prudential Center, where the Pirates have won eight straight and are 18-3 since the start of last season, should help in that regard as will playing the youthful Red Storm, who lost four straight prior to Monday’s victory over DePaul. Seton Hall won nine of the last 10 home games with St. John’s by an average of 12.2 points.
