The BYU Cougars and the Saint Mary’s-California Gaels will both be trying to pick up a win on Thursday when they battle at McKeon Pavilion.

ABOUT BYU (11-4, 2-0 WCC): Eric Mika, a 6-10 sophomore, has shown no rust after returning from a two-year church mission, ranking second in the WCC in both scoring (20.2) and rebounding (8.9) while shooting 52.7 percent from the floor. Sophomore guard Nick Emery is second in scoring (15.7), leads the conference in steals (1.9) and is fifth in 3-pointers per game (2.6). Freshman guard T.J. Haws, also back from a mission and a former prep teammate of Mika and Emery, also is averaging in double figures (13.3) while shooting 41 percent from 3-point range while Houston graduate transfer L.J. Rose leads the team in assists (5.4) while also averaging 6.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

ABOUT SAINT MARY’S (12-1, 2-0): Jock Landale, a 6-11 junior center who is one of seven Australians on the roster, is one of the nation’s most improved players, averaging a team high 17.6 points while also leading the WCC in rebounding (9.6). Junior guard Emmett Naar also is scoring in double figures (10.1) and is tied for second in the WCC in assists (6.0) with teammate Joe Rahon. Junior forward Calvin Hermanson (11.6) is second in scoring and has connected on 30-of-69 3-pointers.

bovada-logo-top-book currently has the Gaels listed as 10.5-point favorites versus the Cougars, while the game’s total is sitting at 146.5 according to MyBookie-White logo -70x40.

Nineteenth-ranked Saint Mary’s begins a key two-week stretch in West Coast Conference play when it hosts BYU on Thursday night. The Gaels then hit the road for three straight games, culminating with a Jan. 14 showdown at unbeaten Gonzaga.

Because the WCC currently has seven teams with RPIs 150 or below, the chances for the league receiving even two NCAA Tournament bids could be iffy, which makes the three-game stretch against the Cougars (11-4, 2-0), at Bay Area-rival San Francisco (11-4, 1-1) and at Portland (9-5, 2-0) even more crucial for Saint Mary’s, which was left out of the Big Dance last March despite finishing with a 27-5 regular season record that included a pair of wins over Gonzaga. The Bulldogs (14-0, 2-0), who are ranked fourth this week, earned the conference’s automatic bid by defeating the Gaels, 85-75, in the WCC Tournament title game in Las Vegas. “They’re all important,” Saint Mary’s coach Randy Bennett told the San Jose Mercury News. “I can only take them one week at a time. They just keep coming. It’s like a nine-week gauntlet. We’ve gone through one week.”

Saint Mary’s-California won its last outing, a 72-60 result against Toreros on December 31. They failed to cover in that game as a -23-point favorite.

BYU was a 81-76 winner in its last match on the road against Lions. They failed to cover the -6-point spread as favorites.
