The Michigan State Spartans and the Minnesota Golden Gophers will both be gunning for a victory on Tuesday when they meet at Williams Arena.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (8-5): Izzo continues to tinker with his team’s lineup, and he may continue to do so until Bridges returns and beyond. Winston and Ward had their first career starts in the last outing against Oakland – as did forward Matt Van Dyk – with second-leading scorer Eron Harris coming off the bench along with usual starting point guard Lourawls Nairn Jr. Izzo has used 10 different players in his starting lineup in the first 13 games as he continues to try to find the right combination to get the Spartans playing their best.

ABOUT MINNESOTA (12-1): The Spartans like to push the tempo, so it will be interesting to see how the Gophers can use their halfcourt defense to create some turnovers against their young opponent. While Minnesota doesn’t press fullcourt like Pitino’s first two teams, the team’s halfcourt defense causes plenty of turnovers, as shown by Arkansas State’s 20 miscues that turned into 33 points on Friday. Pitino may look to turn up the heat against a Michigan State squad that starts a pair of freshmen in the backcourt and averages 14.8 turnovers per game.

bovada-logo-top-book currently has the Golden Gophers listed as 6.5-point favorites versus the Spartans, while the game’s total is sitting at 138.5 according to MyBookie-White logo -70x40.

Two teams that have been a bit surprising in the non-conference portion of the season square off when Michigan State travels to Minnesota for both teams’ Big Ten opener on Tuesday. The Spartans were expected to be a Top 25 team all season long, but injuries and youth have made it difficult for coach Tom Izzo’s team to be consistent, while the Golden Gophers have surprised with their consistency in a 12-1 start.

Michigan State was hoping freshman forward Miles Bridges, the team’s leading scorer (16.6 points) and rebounder (8.8), could be back for this game after missing the last five games with a foot injury, but Izzo terms it “very doubtful.” In Bridges’ absence, fellow freshmen Nick Ward (13.2 points, 6.4 rebounds) and Cassius Winston (7.5 points, Big Ten-leading six assists per game) have stepped forward into more prominent roles. Coach Richard Pitino has been relying on some new faces this season, most notably freshman guard Amir Coffey (11.9 points), who had been leading the team in scoring but has cooled off a bit in the last couple weeks. Nate Mason paces Minnesota in scoring (13.2 points) and assists (5.5 assists), while Dupree McBrayer is the team’s second-leading scorer at 12.6 points a game, giving the Gophers a potent backcourt duo.

Minnesota was a 82-75 winner in its last match at home against Red Wolves. They failed to cover the -13.5-point spread as favorites.

In their last action, Michigan State was a 77-65 winner at home against Grizzlies. They covered the -7.5-point spread as favorites.
