The Missouri Tigers and the Illinois Fighting Illini will both be trying to pick up a win on Wednesday when they battle at Scottrade Center.

ABOUT MISSOURI (5-5): Anderson’s third season has been marked with moments of optimism and embarrassing defeats, like Saturday’s home loss to Eastern Illinois. The Tigers are much-improved defensively and hold opponents to 36.8 percent shooting overall and 27.4 percent from 3-point range – eighth in the nation through Monday – but have struggled to find consistency offensively. Freshman guard Frankie Hughes (12.7 points) and sophomore forward Kevin Puryear (11.9, 6.4 rebounds) have been the most reliable offensive players, but the Tigers have shot just 34 percent while losing three of their last five games.

ABOUT ILLINOIS (9-3): The Illini have a veteran backcourt, which can be a huge advantage in a raucous neutral-site environment. Senior guards Malcolm Hill (18.2 points, 6.4 rebounds) and Tracy Abrams (12.7, 3.2 assists) give Illinois a pair of capable ball-handlers who aren’t likely to crack under pressure late in a close game. The Illini have three solid players who are 6-10 or taller, but 6-7 forward Leron Black (13.1 points, 6.8 rebounds) has been the most consistent contributor in the frontcourt.

bovada-logo-top-book currently has the Fighting Illini listed as 7-point favorites versus the Tigers, while the game’s total is sitting at 137 according to MyBookie-White logo -70x40.

Illinois was a 75-73 winner in its last match at home against Cougars. They covered the -1-point spread as favorites.

Missouri lost its last outing, a 67-64 result against Panthers on December 17. They failed to cover in that game as a -9-point favorite.

Much of the luster has been lost from the Braggin’ Rights matchup between Missouri and Illinois, but the annual clash between the border rivals almost always is competitive. The Tigers and Fighting Illini square off again Wednesday in St. Louis, with the latter searching for its fourth straight win in the series.

The Illini have won the last three meetings by a combined nine points following a string of four straight Missouri victories from 2009-12, and each of the past five contests have been decided by nine points or fewer. “One thing I know about this game is, all of them seem to come down to the last four minutes or the last possession,” Illinois coach John Groce told reporters. “They’ve been highly contested battles, where every possession matters. Both teams have played with tremendous energy, effort and enthusiasm. That’s what I’m expecting. I expect their ‘A’ game, and we’ve got to make sure we have ours.” The Tigers haven’t been able to bring their “A” game consistently during coach Kim Anderson’s three seasons at the helm, and they’re coming off a disappointing 67-64 home loss to Eastern Illinois. The Illini are trending in the other direction, having won five straight – including a 75-73 triumph over BYU on Saturday in Chicago.
