The Monmouth Hawks and the Memphis Tigers will both be gunning for a victory on Tuesday when they meet at FedExForum.
ABOUT MONMOUTH (8-2): The Hawks have not exactly played the toughest of schedules, losing their only two games against teams from Power Five conferences, but they’ve been successful nonetheless. Coach King Rice has a veteran team led by three seniors in Chris Brady, Je’lon Hornbeak and Justin Robinson, who’s scored 13 points per game or better in three straight seasons. Sophomore guard Micah Seaborn is building off a solid freshman campaign, averaging close to 16 points while shooting nearly 40 percent from 3-point territory.

ABOUT MEMPHIS (7-2): Martin saw a dramatic increase of nearly 20 minutes per game from his freshman season to this season. While that can sometimes be a detriment for a young player, the 6-3 guard seems no worse for wear and leads the Tigers in assists at 5.9 per game while chipping in with 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and a team-leading 2.1 steals per game. The Memphis native also became a better shooter, having already surpassed the number of made field goals from last season while making 50 percent of his attempts.

bovada-logo-top-book currently has the Tigers listed as 3.5-point favorites versus the Hawks, while the game’s total is sitting at 150.5 according to MyBookie-White logo -70x40.

Memphis was a 62-55 winner in its last match at home against Blazers. They covered the -5-point spread as favorites.

In their last action, Monmouth was a 81-71 winner at home against Black Knights.

Memphis, which Tuesday hosts a Monmouth squad that has won seven straight games, needs sophomore Dedric Lawson to stay out of foul trouble and on the court if the Tigers are to continue to rack up the wins. One game after scoring only eight points in a loss because of early foul trouble, Lawson exploded for 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots in 40 minutes against UAB to lead the Tigers to their seventh victory.

“When we played Ole Miss, I was in the wrong position and picked up fouls, but today I wanted to be in the right position on defense so I wouldn’t put my team in jeopardy,” Lawson told the media. In the two games the Tigers lost this season – against Providence and Ole Miss – Lawson got into early foul trouble and had to sit, but judging by the eight blocks, which are the third most in school history, Lawson was where he needed to be on the defensive end in Saturday’s 62-55 victory. Lawson may be the most important player to the Tigers, but isn’t the only one who has to be play big minutes for coach Tubby Smith. K.J. Lawson, Cedric’s brother, Markel Crawford and Jeremiah Martin each log better than 29 minutes per game for a team that lacks quality depth.
