The Cal State-Northridge Matadors and the St. John’s Red Storm will both be gunning for a victory on Monday when they meet at Carnesecca Arena.

ABOUT CSU NORTHRIDGE (3-5): Tavrion Dawson poured in a game-high 28 points to pace the Matadors, but it was the last three that mattered most as he knocked down the game-winning shot from long range with one second remaining. Dawson leads the team in scoring at 15.4 points and has been consistent from everywhere on the court, shooting 57.5 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from 3-point range and 86.8 percent from the free-throw stripe. Kendall Smith (15.0), Aaron Parks (13.4) and Darin Johnson (11.1) also average double figures in scoring, while Connecticut transfer Rakim Lubin contributes 9.1 points and a team-best 5.6 rebounds in just under 18 minutes per game.

ABOUT ST. JOHN’S (3-5): The Red Storm did a terrific job distributing the offensive wealth in the win over Tulane, racking up 22 assists on 33 made shots; it was the highest assist total by the team since dropping 22 dimes in an upset win over Syracuse just under a year ago. LoVett is having a terrific all-around season so far, averaging a team-high 18.8 points to go along with 4.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists. Shamorie Ponds (15.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 steals) has been a revelation in his freshman season, scoring in double figures in each of his previous seven games, while Basir Ahmed adds 12.3 points and a team-high 5.9 rebounds.

bovada-logo-top-book currently has the Red Storm listed as 13-point favorites versus the Matadors, while the game’s total is sitting at 167 according to MyBookie-White logo -70x40.

Nothing takes away the sting of a rough stretch of basketball like a one-sided win – which is exactly how St. John’s ended what was a trying week. The Red Storm look to build upon their 20-point triumph over Tulane as they kick off a two-game homestand Monday night against CSU Northridge.

St. John’s used a potent offensive display to end an ugly five-game losing skid, equaling a school record with 16 3-pointers while shooting 55 percent from the floor in a 95-75 thrashing of the Green Wave. “We had a tough week and we really just addressed things with each other, tried to get better each day and learn from our mistakes,” head coach Chris Mullin said afterward. “I thought defensively we were very active, but more importantly, the ball movement was great. We played unselfishly on both sides of the ball and got rewarded for it.” Marcus LoVett was nearly perfect in the slump-busting win, scoring 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting while knocking down all three of his attempts from long range. CSU Northridge halted a three-game skid with a 79-76 win over Idaho State on Saturday.

Last time out for St. John’s, they were a 95-75 winner as they battled Green Wave on the road. They covered in the match as a -5-point favorite.

Last time out for Cal State-Northridge, they were a 79-76 winner as they battled Bengals at home. They failed to cover in the match as a -8-point favorite.
