Colin Kaepernick will be the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers this weekend against the Buffalo Bills, a move that will give the 2013 Super Bowl runner-up a chance to resurrect a career that has steadily lost steam

The head coach Chip Kelly, made the announcement Tuesday. This means that Blaine Gabbert will be benched and Kaepernick resume the position he lost in mid-season last year.

This season Kaepernick only briefly played in the first game, but it has generated a lot of attention by protesting during the national anthem.

Gabbert has experienced all kinds of trouble for the 49ers (1-4) this season. It ranked last in the NFL in yards per play (5.9) and has the second-worst efficiency ratio (69.6) in the league.

Yet it is Kaepernick’s much-publicized bid to light a fire under a national discussion about social equality and societal justice that comes even more sharply into focus now.

Coach Chip Kelly’s decision to elevate Kaepernick was made for no reason other than football. It is because Blaine Gabbert, save for a promising start in the season opener, has been inefficient at running the offense and Kelly thinks a change gives the 49ers a better shot at winning.

“My biggest thing is focusing on football,” Kaepernick said.

Coach Chip Kelly says that Kaepernick, physically, isn’t the chiseled, hyper-athletic guy that he was two years ago. Kaepernick is struggling to gain and maintain weight — something he said has always been an issue and something, he said, should not be blamed on him changing to a vegan diet months ago.

Wide receiver Torrey Smith said Kaepernick looked good in practice Tuesday, consistently hitting big plays. Smith also brought up Kaepernick losing his job to Gabbert last season.

Kaepernick would rebuild his career, Kelly would rebuild his reputation and the 49ers would rebuild some good will with its fan base.
