The Florida Atlantic Owls and the Miami Hurricanes will both be gunning for a victory on Saturday when they meet at Sun Life Stadium.

ABOUT FLORIDA ATLANTIC (1-0): The Owls used three explosive first-half touchdowns – runs of 48 and 37 yards by junior “Buddy” Gregory Howell and an 85-yard reception on a tipped ball by wide receiver Tavaris Harrison – and a near-perfect second-half passing performance by redshirt sophomore quarterback Jason Driskel (14-of-16) to defeat Southern Illinois. Driskel spread the ball around to nine receivers with Henry Bussey III (six receptions, 57 yards) his favorite target. FAU’s defense is led by defensive end Trey Hendrickson, who was second in the nation with 13 1/2 sacks last year and added another in the opener, and sophomore linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who had 10 tackles against the Salukis.

ABOUT MIAMI (1-0): The Hurricanes averaged only 119.7 yards rushing last season, so it’s no surprise Richt is looking to establish a balanced attack and with three backs gaining more than 100 yards against Florida A&M – Mark Walton (116), Gus Edwards (106) and Joe Yearby (105) — it looks like Kaaya will not be counted on to do it all through the air as was too often the case last season. “It’s a big deal,” Richt told the media after the game. “It means you’re blocking well, it means you have three backs that are getting a good role and you’re not just wearing one guy out.” New defensive coordinator Manny Diaz has a reputation for building attacking defenses and that was evident with the Hurricanes piling up 15 tackles for losses with Quarterman and defensive linemen RJ McIntosh, Demetrius Jackson and Courtel Jenkins leading the charge.

bovada-logo-top-book currently have the Hurricanes listed as 25.5-point favorites versus the Owls, while the game’s total is sitting at 63.

The Mark Richt era at Miami couldn’t have started much better, but scoring 70 points in less than three quarters and winning by 67 points against a low-level FCS team – Florida A&M was 1-10 in 2015 – leaves plenty of unanswered questions about just how good the Hurricanes are. The picture should start coming into better focus Saturday when Miami takes a step up in competition at home against Florida Atlantic, which won its opener 38-30 over FCS foe Southern Illinois and gave the Hurricanes a scare last season.

The biggest question heading into Miami’s opener was how its young defense – especially the three starting freshmen linebackers – would perform and the answer was a positive one with the Hurricanes holding the Rattlers to 22 yards rushing and 197 yards in total offense. “They (the linebackers) did awesome,” junior quarterback Brad Kaaya told reporters after the game. “I wasn’t really shocked by their performance. … I’ve known since Day 1 that those guys are ready to play.” Kaaya wasn’t too bad himself, tying his career high with four touchdown passes, but the most impressive offensive number was the 373 yards rushing the Hurricanes accumulated. The Owls proved they could stay with the Hurricanes last season, playing them to a 20-20 tie before Miami scored 24 points in the final 14 minutes, so don’t expect coach Charlie Partridge’s team to be intimidated.
