The Yankees exchanged catcher John Ryan Murphy for outfielder Aaron Hicks of the Twins on Wednesday, this might be the trade of one the most senior member of the team.

Hicks, 26, could play as fourth outfielder, which was Chris Young’s job this past season, Young is now a free agent. Besides this, Yankees might be shopping for Brett Gardner.

Eight-year veteran Brett Gardner, who is second to Alex Rodriguez in years of service with the Yankees, was the team’s starting left-fielder and one of two position-player All-Stars 2015.

“At the very least he provides us with what we were getting from Chris Young for the past two years, and at the very most, he provides us with a lot of flexibility depending on how the winter transpires,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said of Hicks. “We believe he’s an everyday player.”

Hicks, the Twins No. 14 overall pick in the 2008 amateur draft, performed in parts of three league seasons.

The 2015 season was his best, he hit .256 with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs in 97 games, 88 of them in center field. Hicks is able to play both corner positions, and after Jacoby Ellsbury joined the team to play center for the next five seasons, Hicks might move right or left.

Hicks was listed by FanGraphs.com as one of 15 big league outfielders with a throw more than 100 mph in 2015. And hitting .307 with an .807 OPS against left-handers in 2015.

“He’s a player who’s been perceived at a high level for a long time, and we believe he figured a lot of things out here in the past year,” according to Cashman.

The GM compared Hicks’ relationship with Torri Hunter, to Yankees veterans, like Rodriguez with Didi Gregorius. “The same way our guys helped Didi unlock some things, I think that’s what Torii did for Hicks over there,” Cashman said.

Cashman said, about three weeks ago the Yankees and Twins talked about a deal, but Minnesota general manager declined it before reversing course Tuesday.
