Jason Pierre-Paul, New York Giants defensive end will play against the Buccaneers on Sunday in Tampa.

The player was activated by the team on Saturday to their 53-man roster. The Giants, who are last in the NFL, will need Pierre-Paul on Sunday’s game to help the team turn things around.

In order to make space for Pierre-Paul, Jon Beason had to be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Pierre-Paul hasn’t been able to play since last season, following a fireworks accident on July 4. The player lost his right index finger and severely damaged other tissues of his right hand. He was not able to play after the accident, until two weeks ago when the team doctors considered him capable to return to practice. Both Pierre-Paul and the Giants agreed to an incentive-laden contract for the rest of this season.

Back then they hoped the player would be fit to return for Week 10 game against the Patriots, but his roster and playing time incentives in his contract don’t start until next week. Since the player has shown enough improvement in practice the past two weeks, the team decided he was fit to play.

“It’s hard,” Steve Spagnuolo said Thursday. “He hasn’t had a preseason game, hasn’t had any live action. To think he’s just going to go out there and be the JPP that everybody hopes and wants, I don’t know if that’s fair. But we’ll see.”

Last season the player had 12.5 sacks and a total of 42 over the past five years with the Giants. Pierre-Paul and the team’s equipment staff will experiment with different types of gloves and wraps that the player will need to protect his hand.
