Edinson Volquez, whose father died on Tuesday before Game 1 of the World Series, will go to the Dominican Republic to reunite with his family and attend the funeral. Volquez will meet the Royals in New York,  where the series against the Mets shifts.

The Royals manager Ned Yost said “Last thing Eddie told the guys last night when he left is, ‘I’ll see you in New York.’ I expect Eddie to be there and be ready to go for Game 5,” during a press conference before Game2.

Volquez was not able to confirm his presence in Sunday’s Game 5, he said “I don’t know if I’ll be ready for that appearance.”

His father, Daniel Volquez, 63, died from a heart disease complication. His death was confirmed by the Royals after Tuesday’s game, the team won 5-4 to the New York Mets. Volquez, who started the 14 inning game, pitched six innings, allowing three runs. After the game he did not speak to the media.

According to Alcides Escobar, Volquez new his father died before he started the game. “He knew before,” Escobar said. “But he said, ‘I’m going out to pitch.'”

But according to Yost, the Royals did not tell Volquez his father died before the game, because they wanted to honor the family’s wishes, and Volquez backed Yost version on Wednesday, saying he was told of his father’s death after the sixth inning, when he left the field.

“My wife was waiting for me with the general manager [Dayton Moore], and they told me what had happened after I finished working,” he said.”I want to thank my teammates for all their support, to Johnny Cueto and  Yordano Ventura, who were the first ones to call me.”

Mike Moustakas said “I can definitely understand what he’s going through right now,” Moustaka’s mother, Connie, died of cancer in August.”When someone loses a family member, that takes priority over everything that happens. Baseball is baseball, but family, things that happen like that, that’s something that is more important than baseball.”

Royals pitcher Chris Young’s father died last month of cancer.

“For all the stuff that’s happened this year to all of our parents, and a couple other people that have had some bad luck with their families, it has to bring us closer together,” Moustakas said. “This is our family.”
