Marcus Mariota will not be able to play Sunday, after missing the third day of practice because of a sprained MCL in his left knee.  Quarterback Zack Miltenberger will replace Mariota against the Falcons, this was announced by coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Mariota’s injuries are a result of Dolphins pass-rusher Oliver Vernon hits during last week’s game. Vernon received a $37,363 fine for two different roughing the passer infractions, also $17,363 for striking Mariota in the knee during the second quarter and $20,000 for striking the quarterback in the head and neck area during the third quarter.

“He’s frustrated because he wants to play,” said Whisenhun about Mariota.  “We want to get him on the field as soon as possible. It just won’t be this week.”

The Titans will reach for Mettenberger, a 2014 sixth-round draft pick from LSU who started six games for them during a 2-14 season.

Even though the Titans lost all those six games, Mettenberger showed some NFL-caliber traits. After his preseason, analysts expected teams with shaky quarterback situations to offer Titans a trade.

“I think there is a good confidence level in Zach,” Whisenhunt explained. “He had a really good preseason. He’s been around the guys, there’s a good energy in that room with the quarterbacks. It’s a good feeling with those guys. So they all support each other, and we feel good.”

“We’re confident in Zach, and he’s worked really hard physically. You can see it. He moves around better, he’s throwing it well.”
