Michigan State’s Jalen Watts-Jackson said the attention he is receiving is overwhelming.

Watts-Jackson, who suffered a hip fracture after returning a 38 yards botched punt on the final play of a 27-23 win over rival Michigan on Saturday, spoke for the first time from a wheelchair Wednesday.

The player broke his hip when he was tackled into the end zone, Watts-Jackson said he’s been trying to reply to all the messages he has received since Saturday, but it was not possible, because every time he turns on his phone it freezes as a result of the inflow of new social media followers.

“It’s crazy,” the player said, “that 10 seconds could take you from just being on the team to people tweeting you and text messaging you saying, ‘You’re a legend; You’re a hero.”

The famous play started when a punt attempt popped into Watts-Jackson arms, the player said he looked at the scoreboard when he got the ball to see if there was still time to attempt a field goal, but when he saw that there were only six seconds remaining, he made the decision to try to score.

A bunch of his teammates cleared the way for Watts-Jackson, Who was hit by Michigan tight end Jake Butt at the goal line. Not only did the tackle dislocate his hip, but after this his teammates piled on top of him to celebrate.

“I didn’t know if I was going to make it or not,” the player stated Wednesday. “I didn’t know who was behind me. After that, it was really just pain. … Being under that pile with all those people, being about 190 pounds, is not that pleasant of an experience.”

According to his doctors, Watts-Jackson will spend six to seven months recovering before he can begin running again.
