One day after the football coach Steve Sarkisian was put on leave, Southern California decided to fire him on Monday. Pat Haden athletic director made the call one day after Sarkisian showed up at school in no condition to work. Haden avoided to give more information about the coach’s condition. Clay Helton, offensive coordinator was delegated as interim coach Sunday.

USC didn’t give details about Sarkisian’s problems, but there is a record of an incident the second-year in August where the coach appeared to be intoxicated while giving a speech. He apologized for this, and explained he had mixed alcohol and medication, but gave his word of never drink again during the season.

The coach’s erratic behavior on Sunday caused Haden to make the program’s fourth coaching change in two years.

According to Haden’s statement “After careful consideration of what is in the best interest of the university and our student-athletes, I have made the decision to terminate Steve Sarkisian, effective immediately,” and “I want to add how proud I am of our coaching staff and players and the way they are responding to this difficult situation. Through all of this we remain concerned for Steve and hope that it will give him the opportunity to focus on his personal well-being.”
