After Ruben Tejada fractured his right leg’s fibula in the postseason, the New York Mets made the decision to replace him with 24-year-old shortstop prospect Matt Reynolds. The player would become the second player in modern history to make his major league debut in the postseason, if the Mets put him on the field. The first was Mark Kiger in 2006 with the Oakland Athletics.

Player Wilmer Flores is foreseen to play as the regular shortstop with Tejada’s postseason over. Manager Terry Collins said, “Last night’s injury is a big dent, and I will certainly spend some time with Wilmer tomorrow and let him know that he’s proved he can play shortstop at this level, to relax and go out, because he’s going to be the guy.”

Reynolds, who hit .267 with six homers and 65 RBIs in 445 at-bats with Triple-A Las Vegas this season, is a second-round pick in 2012 out of Arkansas. The player hasn’t been in a game since the 51s’ elimination from the playoffs on Sept. 7, but the Mets allowed him to travel to the organization’s complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida, a week ago in the event of an injury.

The team has Infielders such as Eric Campbell working out in Port St. Lucie, but they don’t have a player experienced at shortstop who could be added in the middle of a game, in case Flores couldn’t play because an injury or in-game maneuvering.

Kelly Johnson is a backup player who started one game at shortstop for the Mets this season, but the team is looking for a player with more capability at the position. Collins said about this “No disrespect to Kelly. He’s a tremendous utility player, but we just thought, if Matt’s going to be the guy, that we are protected at shortstop with a guy who has played a lot of shortstop.”
