The Cardinals pitcher, John Lackey, was a key player against the Chicago Cubs Friday night. He outpitched Jon Lester, allowing only two hits in the eighth inning. Rookies Tommy Pham and Stephen Piscotty, both hit a homerun for the Cardinals, leading their team to a 4-0 victory in the NL Division Series.

Lackey said “The atmosphere was outstanding, the crowd was really into it, and I knew I’d have to pitch well,” he also stated “Tonight was special, for sure.” There was a crowd of 47,830 attending the game, the second-largest at 10-year-old Busch Stadium.

Manager, Mike Matheny was full of praise for Lackey, he said “Incredible. I thought his fastball was about as good as we’ve seen. Period,” and, “Anything you wanted to do, he pretty much had it.” Cardinal’s player, Yadier Molina also helped, despite a strained left thumb ligament that put him on the sideline since Sept. 20. “The way he moved behind the plate, the way he and John were working, he is so valuable to our club in so many ways,” Matheny said.

Lackey held the Cubs hitless for five innings, protecting a 1-0 lead, and Kris Bryant’ double-play ball also helped the team at the end of the fourth inning. Addison Russell opened the sixth with a solid single up the middle, and Kyle Schwarber’s hit was the only one allowed by Lackey in 7 1/3 innings.

The Cardinals player, Kevin Siegrist struck out two to end the eighth inning, when it was still a one-run game. Meanwhile, Trevor Rosenthal gave up a single, and a walk, although, the pitcher fanned three in finishing the three-hitter.

The next game is on Saturday, and the Cardinals will turn to Jaime Garcia (10-6). Kyle Hendricks (8-7) will make his postseason debut for the NL wild-card winners.
