Who is Becky Hammon?

Born in March 1977, daughter of Martin and Bev Hammon, she lived in Rapid City in South Dakota, she played basketball at Stevens High School, as a junior, she was South Dakota Miss basketball and as a senior, after averaging 5 steals per game, 4 rebounds ans 26 points, she was voted the South Dakota Player of the year.

Much as happened since her teenage years, winner of 6 WNBA All Star, 2 All WNBA First Team, 2 All WNBA Second Team and one WNBA Assist Leader.

Following the tearing of an anterior cruciate ligament, in 2013, she attended much of the NBA San Antonio Spurs games, practices and coaches’ meeting, while in rehabilitation for a year.

And that is when her fairy tale began. On August 5th, 2014 she was finally hired as an assistant coach for the Spurs making her the 1st full time female coach in the NBA history.

Making quite an impression on head coach Gregg Popovich this is what he thought of her:

“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff. Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic, and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.

Her story doesn’t stop there, au contraire, it’s only beginning because in 2015 she became 1st ever female head coach in the NBA Summer League and was asked to coach the Spurs.

She shined, bringing victory to the Spurs against the Phoenix Suns, with 93-90 in the title game.

“I don’t know if her perspective is unique. It’s women instead of men, but it’s the same game,” Popovich said. “Becky knows what to do on a pick-and-roll just as much as whatTony Parker knows, so I don’t think it’s unique at all.”

So the Spurs celebrated their coach by giving her a Gatorade bath during the celebration in the locker room.

“You never know what your journey has in store,” Hammon said, according to Sports Illustrated.

“You just work hard and keep your nose to the grind. You do things the right way, you treat people the right way, and good things happen. … I’m just thankful that Popovich trusted me with the guys in that locker room and that those guys trusted me back.”
