Paul Pierce is a key player in many regards, and to name a few reasons, let’s begin with his rapport with, coach Doc Rivers. Having coached him in Boston for 9 years, Rivers saw much more than a great athlete at work, but a man who understood the intricacy of basketball playing. Pierce showed his team building skills and still showed his potential on the court, thus combining the best of both worlds.

Pierce also helped tremendously in the negotiation with DeAndre Jordan, understanding the importance of keeping the star center. We may not have all the facts of what was said in that final meeting in Houston but surely the veteran’s wisdom and leadership shined through and the end result speaks for itself.

And the man sure still can take and make big shots, still proving his value on the court, we can understand why Rivers has such appreciation for Pierce, both men have lots in common, both of them have championship success and both of them want the same for the Los Angeles Clippers.

When asked on “The Dan Patrick Show” what Pierce’s role will be, Rivers said he wants everything.

“As a player, you know he’s going to take big shots and make a lot of them,” Rivers said. “The thing I love about him is he’s never been scared to take them. It’s great to have another guy on your team willing to do that.”

When the “Big Three” was put together in Boston, Rivers realized that Pierce understood the significance of team building.

“That team won it in the first year,” Rivers said. “It took a lot of team-building to do that, a lot of sacrifice of shots, of egos. I think Paul has seen that. He knows what worked, and I think that’ll really help our team.”

It is obvious that both men have mutual respect for each other, it’s no wonder why Rivers speaks so highly of Pierce and in that regard, why Paul accepted to sign a three year deal with the Clippers.
